iconAbout Thomas A. Hooven, MD

Thomas Hooven, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology-Perinatology at Columbia University Medical Center. In addition to providing clinical care in the neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU), he performs bacterial genomics research on Group B Streptococcus (GBS), a leading cause of serious infections in newborns. After residency and a year serving as Pediatric Chief Resident, Dr. Hooven completed his subspecialty fellowship training at Columbia University Medical Center in the neonatal ICU of NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, where he learned to care for the full range of sick and at-risk newborns, including those born prematurely. During that time, he developed his research interest in infections that are particularly dangerous for newborns, and participated in the prestigious Pediatric Scientist Development Program.Dr. Hooven is committed to improving outcomes for seriously ill babies, and is seeking to use the latest technologies to find new ways to lower the chance of life-threatening illnesses in this vulnerable group of patients. His current research focuses on using advanced genomic analyses to identify new drug or vaccine targets in an effort to eradicate dangerous neonatal GBS infections. Together with his neonatology colleagues at Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Hooven is passionate about giving every newborn baby the very best chance at a full and healthy life.
