Dr. John Filtes is a diagnostic and interventional radiologist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). He is an assistant professor of radiology at CUIMC and an attending radiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Filtes specializes in advanced image-guided procedures for patients with complex oncologic and vascular conditions. His clinical focus includes interventional oncology treatments such as Y-90 radioembolization, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), immunoembolization, and percutaneous tumor ablation. He also performs minimally invasive therapies for portal hypertension, including transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement and balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO). Additionally, he offers embolization treatments for benign conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (prostatic artery embolization, PAE) and uterine fibroids (uterine fibroid embolization, UFE).

Dr. Filtes is dedicated to advancing the field of interventional radiology through research and education. He has authored numerous publications on embolization and minimally invasive therapies and has presented his work at national and international conferences. His honors and awards include the Society of Interventional Radiology Dr. Constantin Cope Medical Student Research Award and the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Academy of Clinical Excellence (ACE) Rising Star Award.

As an enthusiastic educator, Dr. Filtes mentors fellows, residents, and medical students, emphasizing a patient-centered, evidence-based approach to procedural care. He is an active member of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), and the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE).

Dr. Filtes completed his undergraduate studies in cell biology and neuroscience at Rutgers University, graduating summa cum laude, and earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from SUNY Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine. He went on to complete a general surgery internship at Rutgers Health/Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and his residency in diagnostic and interventional radiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he served as chief resident.

Dr. Filtes believes that thoughtful, compassionate care begins with listening to patients and collaborating closely with referring teams. His goal is to combine technical expertise with clear communication to provide the safest, most effective minimally invasive treatments available.
